Phoenix family discovers 5,000 fentanyl pills inside daughter's thrift store toy

When they found more than 5,000 pills suspected to be fentanyl inside the doll, a family in Arizona purchased a toy worth much more than what they paid for.

Phoenix police said the parents of the child bought a Glo Worm from a thrift store in El Mirage, Arizona, on Saturday. When they found a sandwich bag filled with drugs, the parents cleaned the toy, according to the police. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fentanyl is a synthetic opioid frequently combined with other illegal substances such as heroin and cocaine that produces euphoric-like results. According to the CDC, overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids rose over 16 percent from 2018 to 2019. Police said the family confirmed their finding immediately and handed over the drugs to the authorities. The event was used by law enforcement officers as a warning for parents to check all open and used toys.
