Natural Born Killers (1994)

Two victims of traumatised childhoods become lovers and psychopathic serial murderers irresponsibly glorified by the mass media. They kill pretty well everyone around them. They do however leave one person alive at every shootout to tell the story and they soon become a media sensation thanks to sensationalised reporting. Told in a highly visual style, the love story comes through strong but so does the evil.

The sadism of a Folie à Deux relationship is examined in this raw world of out of control teens, shot on an iphone. Kleptomaniac Charlie who is sexually aroused by his thefts, slowly becomes more submissive to his charismatic sinister older cousin Georgia. Filmed in an experimental style (with a soundtrack recorded at Aleister Crowley's house) we see the early stages of his fanatical interests and obsessions, the product of a cocktail of experiences that add up to a lethal mix. Spot the early signs of a serial killer before it's too late.

The Manson Family (2003)

The Manson Family is a cross between fictional story and documentary, overseeing the crimes of The Manson Family as led by Charlie Manson. The fictional story centers on a Crime Scene-esque TV series. Focusing on the early days of the Spahn Ranch including Manson's attempts to record a music album, and the Manson family crimes, juxtaposed with a new generation of 1990's Manson worshippers. His cult continues.

A psychopath is scouring New York City gay clubs and viciously slaying homosexuals. Detective Steve Burns is ordered to don leather attire, hang at the city's S&M joints and keep an eye out for the killer. But as Steve becomes immersed in club hopping, he begins to identify with the subculture more than he expected.

Funny Games (1997)

An operatic study of two well mannered, charming young men who take a family hostage and torture them with sadistic games for a day. Their delight in having complete control over their victims is palpable and disturbing, but the relationship of the two criminals is very fascinating in that they have reached a perfect balance of master and servant.

Dahmer (2002)

In this fictionalised, fragmented biopic of one of America's most notorious serial killers. As Dahmer considers the fate of his prey, we see flashbacks to the events that led to the evolution of a monster, from Dahmer's tortured relationship with his father, to his first kill, to his patrolling of the gay bars of Milwaukee.

Snowtown (2011)

The true story of Australia's most notorious serial killer John Buntin, the charismatic but violent predator takes his girlfriend's teenage son under his wing and makes him an accomplice in a murder spree. Although motivation for the murders is unclear, the killers were led by Bunting to believe that the victims were paedophiles, homosexuals or "weak". In at least some instances, the murders were preceded by torture, and efforts were made to appropriate victims' Centrelink social security payments and bank funds.

Citizen X (1995)

Based on the true story of Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo. His victims were mostly under the age of 17. In what was then a communists state, the police investigations were hampered by bureaucracy, incompetence and those in power. Nicknamed the Butcher of Rostov, the Red Ripper, and the Rostov Ripper, who committed the sexual assault, murder, and mutilation of at least 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990.

Zodiac (2007)

Few cases in history are as intriguing as that of the Zodiac killer. Terrorised San Francisco and northern California in the late Sixties, the killer's identity remains unknown. The killer originated the name "Zodiac" in a series of taunting letters sent to the local Bay Area press. These letters included four cryptograms (or ciphers). Of the four cryptograms sent, only one has been definitively solved.

A painter struggling for inspiration finds an unexpected muse after he accepts a teaching position in a small town and becomes the caregiver to Eddie, a seemingly docile art student with a rare sleepwalking condition. The condition of wanting to achieve artistic heights through murder has been an age old conundrum to many serial killers who consider their crimes art.
