It's native to South-East Asia but the most variety is found in Malaysia. It is now cultivated in Oceania, Africa, and Central America.

It has a tender, juicy flesh that tastes sweet and sour like a grape. Some of them have bitter seeds while others have some sweetness. (NOTE: Do not eat the seeds raw (they have tonic chemicals) but it is fine to nibble around them and the skin is inedible).

-To eat it: cut a line across the skin to peel it away, pop the white ball into your mouth and bit the flesh off until you reach the seed (the stone) and spit it out. It's a lot like eating a cherry

-Helps treat diarrhea symptoms and fevers

-It was named in the Malay language as "hairy"

It's originally from Sub-Saharan Africa but is now grown in parts of the US, Chile, Australia, and New Zealand.

-Helps promote oral health and prevents kidney stone formation

-Easily made into a sorbet: 3 uglis juiced, 1 cup sugar, 1.5 cup water, 1 Tb gelatin, 1/4 cup creme fraiche, and some rind (mix and chill in an ice cream maker)

-The rind is very tough
