Jesus Christ. Art History majors are for kids who come from money and can afford a bullshit degree, or otherwise people with a truly serious passion for art who want to make their very difficult way in that competitive world. What the president said is right-on, but our generation has gotten so used to having our “dreams” rubber-stamped, being told that our choices are correct and valid by simple virtue of being “our choices”, that the slightest bit of objective criticism- namely that an education in a field where demand exists might be more lucrative than a degree in a field where there are 1,000 applicants for every well-paying position- sends us into a screeching tizzy. Take it from a former Drama major: supply and demand are real things. Passion is also real thing, and a good thing- but the economy can’t support a million new museum curators per year. We’d run out of marble.
Benny Johnson tries to appropriate millennial mechanisms, language, and humor in an effort to make the Republican Party cool, vol. 1156
What the actual fuck, Buzzfeed.
This is great. But it’s the Justice Department that’s making this decision, not “The Obama Administration”, per se. We can quibble about whether or not Holder/Justice takes its cues from the White House, but there has been a long and disturbing tendency to try to paint any action taken by any federal agency, any cabinet post, or even by Congressional Democrats, as action taken by the President, personally. It’s a way of marginalizing the weight of the Federal Government by characterizing it as one rogue dude running around making unilateral decisions that effect everybody. The biggest example of this is the moniker “Obamacare”, which intentionally makes it sound as if Barack Obama himself is going to become everybody’s personal physician.
Warren. Is. Not. Running. One or two spec pieces on what a Warren candidacy would mean to Clinton and the overall shape of the race might be fine. But the nearly CONSTANT, breathless expectancy from Politico, The New Republic, Buzzfeed and every Left-leaning (and some Right-leaning) blog on the internet about a candidacy that the presumed candidate herself has not uttered a word in favor of, is getting ridiculous. I like Elizabeth Warren. But she’s not going to go on an ego-driven suicide mission to accomplish nothing more than to weaken the eventual nominee’s candidacy. She’s not Nader.
This is what happens when politicians demagogue and fetishize “Law and Order” for decades to try and get gigs. Private prisons run for profit, which incentivizes prolonged incarceration with minimal quality of life for inmates (why pay for nutritious food or decent conditions or adequate security when there are shareholders to pay?) This is sickening.
Jesus tapdancing Christ…. Do these guys even government?
Don’t knock Clapham. We can’t all live North of the river.
So conservatives, who are ostensibly in favor of mandatory transvaginal ultrasounds, are trying to make Democrats look like meddlers in people’s personal medical affairs? With the ACA, which makes no such intrusions? That’s rich. Here’s a thought: “Obamacare” (which isn’t a thing) is about to transform from an abstract concept (that’s easy to demonize and campaign against) into what it’s always been: a series of laws and regulations that will improve the way health care is experienced in this country. There is no looming takeover of the healthcare industry- no monolithic federal agency putting doctors on government payroll. Your local ACA exchange won’t say “Obamacare” or even “ACA”. It’ll be “Kentucky Healthchoice Plus” or something along those lines. You’ll never see “Obamacare” materialize because it isn’t and was never a thing. You’ll just get screwed a lot less by your insurance company. Enjoy running against that, Republicans.
Real patriotic day you’re having, Benny. Nevermind that Obama got exactly what he wanted in the end and left Russia with the responsibility of owning the outcome in Syria in perpetuity. Also, how are any of these examples of Putin “owning” Obama? This is some mayfly attention span news cycle trifling. Look at the whole board, fellas.
Ditto on the Hunchback score- weak movie, phenomenal music. I’m still awestruck at how Disney was able to capitalize on their Goofy character. They had to get really creative to make it work, and they pulled it off with a little help from TEVIN CAMPBELL (aka Powerline.)
Why the FUCK are we still seeing “look how cool Putin is” posts?
At least two thirds of these are just “things upper middle class girls from the greater New York metropolitan area love”.
#18 makes absolutely no sense. Did Federer, Nadal and Djokovic all retire?
You DO realize that this character is good natured satire, right? That these qualities of Ron Swanson’s are caricatures of libertarianism set to counterpoint Leslie Knope’s caricature of liberalism- making the overarching point that NEITHER is more or less American than the other.
File this under pervy fanfiction. Thank you for murdering our childhoods, Buzzfeed.
False. Brad Neely is a Man God. Never though I’d see him reduced to Buzzfeed listicles.
So everyone in Long Island (or at least the “royalty”) is Jewish? Hey BRAVO employee who wrote this post and is not from Long Island: the New York/Long Island culture, accent, etc. you’re referencing is pretty much a melange of equal parts Italian, Irish Catholic and Jewish. You’re welcome.
You’ve got to be carefully taught.
The Max- generic for about a million different places
Wonka Industries- Exists in less magical form
Frosty Palace- It’s a malt shop. They were everywhere in the mid 20th century.
SCDP- based on a number of small/mid sized NYC ad agencies in the 60s
Bluth Banana Stand- original frozen banana can still be found on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA. It’s a real thing.
McMillan Toys- basically Mattel, right?
Satriales- There are a million places just like this in North Jersey.
Wally World- Disney Land
Big Kahuna Burger- TK Burger in Orange County, or about a dozen specialty burger joints in LA. LA likes their burgers. I get the point that it’s not the goods and services provided but rather the characters and fictional context of the companies. But still. A lot of these places are based directly on things that DO exist. I also echo what someone else has probably already said: JACKRABBIT SLIMS. Still can’t believe somebody hasn’t sunk a few million bucks into that idea.
Seems more candid and assertive than pompous. Seems like every one of these statements is a refusal to a request to dance like a trained chimp. Doesn’t make him a jerk. Prickly, maybe. Not the best interview, probably. But jerk? C’mon.
Benny Johnson, stop trying to make people like Jeff Flake seem cool. It’s embarrassing.
I knew the first time I heard it that the new Vampire Weekend would get played to death this summer (in a good way.) Perfect for all northeastern/Atlantic summer needs. Diane Young is a hell of a jam.
Yikes, this bit didn’t land. Not funny. Swingandamiss, Matt.
#6.. “Hey girl.”
And I wondered how BJ could follow up his “REAGAN YOLO” post. Internet Republicans feelin’ SASSY these days! Seriously, there is nothing more entertaining and unintentionally hilarious than Republican overreach and premature gleefulness over Obama’s impending demise. What’ll this be, 0 for 20 for you guys? Benghazi isn’t a scandal (ask Charles Krauthammer), neither is the AP/Justice thing (what laws were broken?) The IRS thing is shitty, but sadly not exactly rare. The Bush IRS spent two years auditing the NAACP. And it’s not like this is something that can be tied directly to Obama. It’s just a bad news cycle for the administration- negative talk in the press- which is enough to buoy GOP spirits alone. Once again, all about politics, not policy. But seriously, Ben, BJ wrote a fanboy puffpiece on RICK PERRY… a WEEK AGO. Fine to have conservatives on the staff, but at least make them serious ones. Get rid of this chump.
Girl’s gorgeous, but I’d love to see an actual “big” girl modeling “plus sized” clothing one day. I know this girl qualifies for “plus sized” by professional modeling standards, but the de facto meaning of “plus” is larger than the norm- if anything, this girl is smaller than the norm.
Hmmm… what about record deficit spending and explosive debt? Was that YOLO? Iran-Contra? Not acknowledging AIDS? The savings and loan crisis? Funding, arming and training Osama Bin Laden? #SWAG, amirite? Stop trying to make Conservatism cool, Buzzfeed. It’s getting more and more embarrassing.
Jesus, Buzzfeed. Carrying water for the HERITAGE FOUNDATION now? http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2013/05/07/heritage_immigration_fiscal_impact_study_is_terrible.html
Watch conservatives get all suddenly puffed up about the universal, solemn, patriotic duty of paying taxes now that Lauren Hill has decided that slavery exempts her.
Tom, Kathy, I’m Dr. Steven Poop. I’m sorry, there’s absolutely Nothing I can do for your son. But I can do the robot. That’ll be $5000
That last picture is the only thing about this that didn’t make me want to throw up.
God bless this guy. He’s fighting for his family here. A great American.
Re: #15- you obviously don’t know what 200 pounds looks like.
God, this movie was great.
