TAMPA — Mitt Romney disarmed years of tension over his faith and his private equity experience with a single joke using the word “H-E-double hockey sticks.”

The reserved candidate expressed a willingness to talk about his Mormon faith — and used a joke to show the humor usually masked when the cameras are on. In that one line, Romney did more to combat his robotic reputation than more than a year on the campaign trail.
