Pelosi Backed Boehner’s Tax Cut Proposal

WASHINGTON — Speaker of the House John Boehner’s “Plan B” to avert the fiscal cliff would cut taxes for incomes under $1 million — a higher threshold than the White House demands, but one that had a powerful backer, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
In May, Pelosi sent Boehner a letter calling for the immediate passage of a middle class tax cuts up to that level, while President Barack Obama was on the campaign trail calling for taxes to rise on incomes over $250,000. The White House has since revised that target at $400,000 in ongoing negotiations with Boehner, but has shown few signs it would accept the $1 million level.
“Democrats believe that tax cuts for those earning over a million dollars a year should expire and that we should use the resulting revenues to pay down the deficit,” Pelosi said in the letter.
A month earlier on The Charlie Rose Show Pelosi went further, noting Democratic opposition to the $250,000 mark.
“In our caucus, there is a school of thought that says let’s get rid of all the tax cuts,” she said. “I say, let’s begin by getting rid of tax cuts for people making more than a million dollars a year. I’m not even saying $250,000. The president’s saying $250,000. A million and above. Who can argue with that?”
Boehner’s backup plan would not deal with the mandatory spending cuts resultant from the failure of the super committee, while he is still negotiating with Obama for a more comprehensive solution that addresses spending.

Kathryn Turner 4 months agoSo, our country goes bankrupt, the entitlements end and FINALLY America wakes up and a third party comes into power. The fact is… “No pain, no gain”.

art corvelet 4 months agoWhere do I sign up for that 3rd Party? Lifelong Republican here that didn’t ever consider it until Boehner’s news conference this morning.
That’s the group? Drawing a line in the sand for that specific group that makes between $400K-$1M/yr.?! That group is going to win you elections?
Change registration to Independent until Republicans in Congress do something to bring you back. -

timvans 4 months agoAs a conservative, I just want some Republicans that will dig in and fight it to the death. These clowns cave at every turn. The reason we don’t get as many people voting for us is not because we don’t have good ideas or because we don’t explain them well, but because we don’t fight for them with the intensity that democrats fight for socialism….Bad Idea to let the democrats have this and no spending cuts, especially in light of the fact much of the new tax revenue is proposed to go to new spending instead of paying down debts. I want an asskicker, not a bootlicker, and i want one now…..Our country is in dire need, where is the George Washington we so desperately need….

tedr6 4 months agoBoehner, You’re FIRED. Time to get the good ‘ol boys club out of our government. This weasel Boehner is driving people to the 3rd party way of thinking because his main strategy seems to be capitulation. If the Repubs are going to be the new Neville Chaimberlain party than I’m out.

Professor Higgins 4 months agoShocker! Time for a third party. Republicans = Liberal Democrats with the illusion of principles, but as they are truly liberal democrat bureaucrats (Politicians)… it’s just a matter of time before the mask of principle comes off. The silver lining is that if the Republicans concede fully, Obama will have no one to blame but himself. Finally!

Happyphilter 4 months agoThe Republican party is at fault for putting unprincipled people into power. We had the chance to allow people like DeMint, Lee and Ron Paul to become the face of the party but they were shut down by party leaders. We lost face, lost the election, and are losing power because of RINOs, moderate flip floppers, and sellouts. People want principle, not pandering.

bobs24 4 months agoBoehner or Pelosi, there’s not a whole lot of difference. They’re both Progressives. He’s a gutless, save my Congressional job at all costs, and she’s brain dead but beloved by the low self esteem, less informed (most of them that vote) Democrats. The rest, dare I say the 47% just have their hand out and couldn’t care less about our country. $23 trillion debt…here we come on the high speed train.
