Yeah, it's funny. I've wanted to get back at more than a few power tripping law enforcement officials.. but why make the receptionist suffer? She didn't tow the car- she has no control over the situation.

The guy was only doing it to spite her. I would've been pissed as well but would've made the guy count a penny at a time…I would've pretended to mess up at the 56,678 penny counted and start all over again….why? Because I'm paid to be there and the guy is losing his Saturday afternoon counting pennies.

Like it or not, pennies are legal currency. If the business did not note they would not take them (like the “larger bills” thing seen in many places), they have to take it. It is legal currency valid to pay a debt. And no sympathy for the “poor woman.” By the time she did all the fussing, she could have counted that money.

I think it is funny as hell. I would have done the same thing if my car was towed when I didn't warrent that action. If I park somewhere that I know it can get towed then I would pay the fee properly and move on. I agree with what these guys did!! LOL

The company inconvenienced him, so he is inconveniencing them. They should take the money.

Although some of you are qucik to judge this man's actions as immature or juvenile and rush to the defense of the tow companies….I have to say as someone who also had to have the police involved in an instance of my car being towed when it was LAWFULLY parked, that these operations thrive on this sort of behavior.
Do some research….since 1965 ALL US Coins are legal tender in ANY amount. The business can refuse any form of legal tender IF it is understood BEFORE they enter into a transaction…(like the signs that say “No $20 bills after 9PM, etc etc) But these jerks did not, and therefore MUST accept the payment. Maybe Karma is biting them in the booty…and btw, MOST of these little towing gigs are family-owned and operated and make a KILLING on the misfortunes of others!
So, if you are looking for sympathy for the tow-companies, then I suggest you look in the dictionary between “Sh*t” & “Syphillis”……….

While what he did may have been childish and unfair to the woman working behind the counter, pennies are money. They're made for a reason. She could have just let it go, accepted the pennies and taken them to a coinstar. But she chose to exacerbate the situation by flat out refusing the payment, even when a policeman ordered her to. That is absurd.

Why so much anger at this guy doing what he can to get back at the extortion racket that wants an exorbitant fee for inconveniencing him out of all proportion to the “offense” he is supposed to have committed? And for all the people whining about the company being made to accept payment: The cops enforced the law in this instance. Legal tender can be refused in some jurisdictions IF the debt is incurred at the same time payment is being offered—for instance, stores that post notices refusing to accept large denominations, or vending machines that can't take certain coins. If a debt is to be collected after the fact, then legal tender MUST be accepted—that is the very definition of legal tender. The extortion racket could have refused the pennies that were offered—but had they done so, they would have lost their right to collect the debt at all, and would have been legally obligated to return the car without a substitute payment being made. That's a risk you run when you open a business that makes huge profits by pissing people off.

So it was a bit mean spirited, but you can't deny the hint of genius… I really don't understand why they had to call the cops though. The lady could have just taken it to a Coinstar… Jeez.

I'm inclined to believe, based on the way the cops acted, that this company is some sort of predatory towing operation. I've racked up a few fines over the years and I have noted, in passing, that many of them cannot be paid in cash, likely to prevent just this sort of shennanigans.

My husband orders $2 bills from our bank; we use this as spending money for small things…it's a very convenient amount to have in a bill. Many times younger people think it's not real money and don't want to take it. We're not trying to piss people off…we just like $2 bills.

Business's are permitted to refuse to accept bills over $20 or $100 etc these guys are jerks..3 cops? What a waste of $$
