Mexico still has a lot of this type of caricature depicting people of African ascent. While no harm is meant from it (this situation is similar in countries like Japan), I can see how it would offend Americans. This being said, when Mexico abolished slavery in 1810, it did away with the caste system and the names for races.
In Mexico, there is just the word “black” (Negro, in Spanish), and it does not take the offensive tint it has in English. There is less offence to mentioning race in Mexican culture, even having been an extra racist Spanish Catholic culture before. I don’t know whether the very few African ascended Mexicans dislike this portrayal, though.
