1. Someone gave you a compliment!
“What now?” you ask. You may not know it, but you’ve gone through this before. Here’s the process of taking a compliment, laid out in five easy stages:
2. 1. Denial
Other reactions during this stage may include:
“I’m not that pretty, actually.”
“I’m not smart, I just kind of know stuff.”
“I don’t think I’m that great. Am I? I don’t know. I think I’m just all right.”
3. 2. Anger
A mere ounce of exasperation over a compliment is enough to make you go from Bruce Banner to Hulk in no time. Just take a few deep breaths and have a cup of tea, or listen to some smooth jazz.
4. 3. Bargaining
Kneel before whatever higher power floats your boat. And if you don’t believe in higher powers, that’s okay too. Maybe a shooting star. Or a four-leaf clover. Something like that.
Just don’t try to bargain with your cat. They won’t listen and they don’t care.
5. 4. Depression
There’s no hope left. You’ll never hear a compliment for as long as you live. (At least it feels that way. Or maybe you’re doomed. Who knows?)
6. 5. Acceptance
At the end of the day, it’s better just to accept the fact that you’re a good person who’s deserving of a little boost now and then. Open up to people who are genuinely nice. Go ahead, take that compliment. You deserve it!
