ssb062000 a year agoI think the general problem here is that people seem to be using two different definitions of “surreal”. Yes, they are “surreal” by definition : “having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream; unreal” with the ‘disorienting’ over emphasized reflections and the use of highly saturated color. They don’t, on the other hand, really fall into the category of “Surrealism” as a style of art. Unfortunately when discussing art, though, you can’t term something “Surreal” without directly referencing the Surrealist artists like Salvador Dali or Max Ernst. If anything, they’re more narrative Pop-Art portraits…if you really wanted to, you could probably get away with saying they’re “surreal narrative pop-art portraits”, but saying “Surreal Star Wars Paintings” sends the wrong message to the art community.

I get what everyone is saying, the direction of the art overall is realistic but some of the elements in the paintings are still bizarre enough to me for it to be considered surreal. The reflections are highlighted in a bizarre manner as if it were trying to portray the emotion and characters related to those parts of the story more so than being real. For example, if you look at a larger version of the C-3PO painting you will notice that the reflection is skewed in a manner that makes nearly no sense. In on the brim of his right eye there is Java The Hut and another man peering over above him, on his chin is Obi-Wan sitting in a corner as if he were still alive, and on the brim of his right eye there is a Jawa (figure with glowing eyes), Lando, and Darth Vader. Correct me if i’m wrong but I don’t think there was ever a scene where it would be possible to create a reflection such as that. It may still be debatable but I just wanted you all to see where I was coming from.
