deaddrift a year agoThat is one very, very cool video. That phenomenon—super-cooled brine sinking to the ocean floor—is thought to be a major driver of the downwelling in the North Atlantic that starts the upstream end of the global ocean circulation, which moves enormous quantities of heat around the world. The Gulf Stream, that keeps Europe so much warmer than its latitude would make you suppose, (Ireland has palm trees!) is a part of this global current. A major concern is that, due to continued anthropogenic atmospheric warming, large quantities of fresh water will be released into the North Atlantic from melting glaciers in Greenland. Fresh water is less dense than salt water, so it tends to pool on top of the ocean, where it is exposed to subzero winter air. If this fresh water were to become the major component of winter pack ice, there will be no salt to concentrate, cool, and sink to the ocean floor. Then the ‘pump’ that’s driving this global thermohaline circulation may stop pumping. If this happens, global weather patterns will be thrown into a completely new equilibrium. It’s quite likely that extremely cold weather, no longer offset by the heat transport of the Gulf Stream, will cause glaciation and extreme social disruption in Europe, and elsewhere, which is how global warming can paradoxically lead to Arctic cooling. The arresting of global deep water currents is thought to have happened before, during the Younger Dryas ice age, about 13,000 years ago. The change in circulation is not only thought to be very large in its effect. but also to take effect extremely quickly, on the order of decadal time scales, which means your grandkids could possibly witness this event. Through the looking glass… here we come. I’m gonna go buy some CFL light bulbs. That should help.
