joeb11 a year agoTHE “H” WORD AND WHY I STILL USE IT It seems like every couple of days there’s a new refutation of the word hipster, usually by people accused of being hipsters, such as Fred Armisen. Hipster-deniers are many, and their counterargument always boils down to the theory that people who use hipster as a pejorative are just jealous and/or insecure. I’m here to say that we are not jealous or insecure. We are annoyed and at our wit’s end. I continue to use the “h” word and still feel that it is a valid label. What Armisen and others don’t seem to grasp is that a hipster is not someone who is hip. Hipsters are trend-following nitwits who latch on to the silliest and most pretentious fads in the hopes of seeming cool. They flaunt their pretension and trendiness in an arrogant, often condescending way. A hipster is not cool. A hipster is someone who is trying way too hard to look cool and who ends up looking ridiculous instead. That’s what a hipster is, Fred. Whether you are one, I don’t know. But make no mistake about it: these people are real. I see them in Chicago every day. I am subjected to their annoying and idiotic conversations. They are a public nuisance, and until they disappear I will continue to use the word hipster. So there.
