Maria Minina, a spokeswoman for the weeklong Kubana festival in southern Russia, said Saturday that the band's headlining performance the previous evening had been canceled because of its treatment of the flag. The American band is known for its sexually explicit songs, including "The Bad Touch," with its unforgettable lyrics: "You and me, baby, ain't nothin' but mammals, so let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel." A Russian booster rocket carrying three satellites has crashed at a cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Spectacular footage showed the Proton-M rocket veering off course seconds after its launch in the early hours, before erupting into a ball of flames and unleashing clouds of noxious black smoke. "It seems something is going wrong," said a television commentator during the live coverage of the launch. "Something is wrong. It seems it will be a catastrophe," said the presenter, his voice trembling, shortly before the rocket exploded. The rocket was supposed to take three Russian Glonass-M navigation satellites into space. The Russian space agency Roskosmos said there appeared to be no casualties, adding it could not immediately say whether areas near the crash site were being evacuated. "A rocket carrier fell to the ground and exploded on the territory of the (Baikonur) cosmodrome," the space agency said in a statement. Kazakh officials said the fumes from the rocket fuel consisting of 600 tons of highly poisonous kerosene, heptyl and amyl might present a danger to the local population. Residents of several nearby towns were told to stay indoors and keep their windows shut. The Russian space programme has been a source of national pride in the country since it sent the first man into space in 1961 after launching the first Sputnik satellite four years earlier. But, more recently, Russia has suffered several major setbacks, notably losing expensive satellites and an unmanned supply ship to the International Space Station. Russia suffered a disaster at the same cosmodrome in 1960 when a prototype rocket exploded on the launch pad and released the highly poisonous rocket fuel known as the "devil's venom". The Russian space agency referred to that tragedy as a veritable "inferno" - 126 people were burned alive or vaporised altogether, while others died of noxious fumes or succumbed to burns later. The Soviet Union, which was then locked in an arms race with the US, imposed total secrecy over the disaster and the files were only declassified in the 1990s.

Two members of band who escaped arrest after February's protest in Moscow's main cathedral leave the country. Two members of Russia's anti-Kremlin punk band Pussy Riot have fled the country to avoid prosecution for staging a protest against Vladimir Putin at a church altar, the band said on Sunday. A Moscow court sentenced three members of the all-female opposition band to two years in prison on 17 August for staging a their song Punk Prayer at the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February and calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin. The sentence drew sharp international criticism of the Russian government, while opposition groups at home have portrayed it as part of a Kremlin clampdown on dissent. Police said earlier this week they were searching for other members of the band. "In regard to the pursuit, two of our members have successfully fled the country! They are recruiting foreign feminists to prepare new actions!," a Twitter account called Pussy Riot Group said. Defence lawyers of the convicted Pussy Riot members – Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich – are expected to appeal against their sentences next week. Tolokonnikova's husband, Pyotr Verzilov, told Reuters on Sunday that the two members of the group who have fled Russia had taken part in the cathedral protest along with his wife. "Since the Moscow police said they are searching for them, they will keep a low profile for now. They are in a safe place beyond the reach of the Russian police," he said by phone. Asked if that meant a country which had no extradition agreement with Russia, Verzilov said: "Yes, that suggests that." "But you must remember that 12 or even 14 members who are still in Russia actively participate in the band's work now; it's a big collective," he added. The Kremlin has dismissed criticism by western governments and prominent musicians including Madonna and Sting as politically motivated. Putin, back at the Kremlin since May for his third presidential term, said before the three band members were sentenced that they should not be judged too harshly. Under Russian law the three Pussy Riot members put on trial could have faced as much as seven years' jail for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, but the prosecutors asked for three years and they were sentenced to two.
