Guy Captures Video Of Guitar String Oscillations

This is neat. Using the iPhone 4, youtuber Justkylevids managed to capture a video of his guitar oscillating, sparking a debate on reddit over the video’s credibility. Some say it is edited, while others say it happened because of the iPhone’s rolling shutter. I say regardless of the video’s legitimacy, it’s a dizzying and awesome look at sound in motion.       With the help of the original creator of the video, Kyle Jones, I tried it again today with the sun through my window. IT WORKED!! You can do this too by: having an iphone4, using a bright sky, and picking/strumming rather hard. Thanks Kyle!! (also, I know I suck at guitar)

      Not fake. “It occurs because its CMOS sensor captures video one line at a time, so there’s an increasing lag as it scans down the frame. This ‘rolling shutter’ effect of movement being displaced across each frame can also be seen in DSLR-shot movies. In this case the video has been rotated, so the effects of that delay run left-to-right, giving interesting (and pretty) jagged effects, particularly on the bottom ‘E’ string.”

      Ok so I watched this 5 min ago, it blew my mind, and then literally 3min ago I just finished fishing my iphone4 out of my guitar. I now believe the video is fake. Here’s my crap guitar playing skills to prove it. (I figured the light from the fan was providing enough of a “back light” and the only thing I see is normal vibrations)
