10 Things To Do In New Orleans This Summer

Nursing a hangover in your bed is one way of spending your summer in NOLA, but these 10 things to do while in the Crescent City over the summer might be enough to tempt you out of the house.

1. Running of the Bulls for San Fermin en Nueva Orleans

On July 12, put on a white shirt and red bandanna for the annual Running of the Bulls. Ok, this isn't Spain, and while you won't be chased by actual bulls, the plastic bats wielded by the Big Easy Rollergirls are enough to get you moving (even if you're still drunk at 8am).

2. Late Night mini-golf at City Putt

City Putt is a new 36-hole mini golf complex located in City Park, and it's open till midnight on weekends! Grab a beer from the concessions and hit the course with some friends. If you fancy some nature, the park's botanical garden nearby is beautiful and worth the walk through.

3. Get cultured at a Museum

NOMA has displays of Monet, Picasso, Degas, and many more. On alternating Fridays, you can catch a free cooking seminar at Cafe NOMA.

The National World War II Museum has one of the best exhibits on D-Day in the world. Located right down the street is the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

DON'T miss an opportunity to eat at Cochon. It's right down the street and one of the best bites in the city.

4. Hop on the ferry for Wednesdays on the Point

Head across the river to the Algiers ferry landing to hear some of New Orlean's best musicians perform for free. Shows start July 9 and run every Wednesday until September.

5. Get your drink on at Tales of the Cocktail

From July 16th-20th, up your cocktail game during this 5 day festival that explores what's now, what's new, and what's next in the bartending world. Schmooze with cocktail connoisseurs and spirit professionals as you sip on liquor during tastings, lectures, workshops, and more. Tickets are a bit pricey, but well worth it for those that enjoy drinking in fancy company, or really for those just that enjoy drinking in general...

6. Get artsy at White Linen Night

On August 2, dress in your best white linen outfit and head over to the 300-600 blocks of Juliet St. in the Central Business District. Nearly 20 galleries will open their doors at night for the annual Summer Art Celebration. You will find contemporary works from local and international artists, as well as plenty of live music and curbside food and drink. Best of all, admission is free!

The Whitney WWL Afterparty, while not free, is well worth the $10 price tag.

7. Go to the Audubon Zoo or Aquarium

For a more family friendly outing, the zoo or aquarium are great places to spend a summer day. Routinely ranking among the country's best, the zoo has tons of cool exhibits displaying both native and exotic animals alike. If air conditioning is more your thing, the Aquarium has over 15,000 species of marine wildlife to explore.

8. Stumble through the Red Dress Run

If you are sick and tired of events that require you to dress in costume, New Orleans is not a city you should be living in. The Red Dress Run benefits over 50 local charities and brings in thousands of participants every year. The criteria are simple: wear a red dress (mandatory), come thirsty (unlimited food and beer), and be ready to run/walk/crawl the 2 miles from start to finish. Race starts at 11am, drinking starts anytime.

9. Tube down the Bogue Chitto River

Get nice and bronzed on a hot day by hopping in a tube and floating down the river with friends. On weekend afternoons, big float groups party down the river with coolers and radios in tow. At only $15 a tube, this makes for a fun but affordable day trip.
