One of the common misperceptions about a writer's life is that they are all loaded thanks to generous advances and book deals.
Then, once their book is published, the money keeps flowing in, right?

A survey reported in The Guardian says, of 9,000 authors polled by Digital Book World, 54% of traditionally-published authors and almost 80% of go-it-alone writers are making less than $1,000 (£600) a year.
Only a very small proportion – 0.7% of self-published writers, 1.3% of traditionally-published, and 5.7% of hybrid writers – reported making more than $100,000 (£61,000) a year from their writing.
