Originally, even white men who did not own enough land to qualify were unable to vote. It was a true oligarchy. Only those rich enough to have been nobility in old Europe had the right to vote. In spite of all their rhetoric about freedom and liberty, the founders of this nation, rich landowners who didn’t want to pay their taxes, extended the vote only to themselves and continued to own slaves.
