Enormous "City Band" Pencil Portrait

Chris LaPorte found a small, old, faded, and somewhat blurry photo he found in his mother’s basement and decided to draw it… The result is spectacular.

Inspired by a photograph of Chris’ grandfather’s 1926 high school marching band in Bay City, Michigan, it took a year to create and was submitted in the 2012 ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, MI.

The photo to drawing ratio is 1:540 and is not a copy of a photograph but an original composition. Drawn onto panels on the wall, no projection of any kind was used.

City Band will be exhibited at the University of North Carolina starting January 18 2013.
