Why do so many people feel that this woman is ugly? Around the internet, I keep seeing comments along the lines of “fantastic voice, but damn, she's hideous!”
I'm not trying to appear virtuous by saying this, but she looks just like a normal woman in middle age to me. I'd go so far as to say that she looks positively sweet and approachable and and even kind and interesting. There's no way to put this without dredging up a million clichés, but it's true: There really is more than one kind of beauty. It completely evades me how some can detach their definition of what beauty is from what is surprising, joyful, intriguing, or hopeful in the world. The cheesiness of manipulative editing aside: If you can't look at Miss Boyle and see beauty, then I rather suspect that you've had the larger portion of your sense of wonder and grace stolen from you by whatever cultural programming you've received over the years. If so, it might be a good thing (and revelatory) to begin to question what you think beauty is, and is not.
