MommyDrea 3 months agoThere are these really small aquatic turtles that they sell here in KC, but the dude has a “For Scientific Purposes” or some shit, kind of sign in front of them. I’ve already heard they can carry these diseases..
I really hate to sound ignorant, but can a vet help with determining if one would be sick, I WANT WUN! -

It’s illegal to sell turtles under a certain size in the U.S. One exception is turtles for “scientific purposes,” which is why they’re being advertised as such. Turtles can carry salmonella, but well, so can tomatoes. I’ve never once contracted salmonella in the 10 odd years I’ve been living with reptiles. It’s because I keep them clean and practice proper husbandry. I personally think the salmonella fears are completely overblown, but you should read up on the debate and decide for yourself. If it’s any reassurance, healthy turtles act like healthy turtles. If you want a turtle, I highly recommend that you research their needs, maybe read about Audrey R. Slider, and look into adopting one instead. :)
