President Zillur Rahman died at a Singapore hospital Wednesday, family sources said. He was 83.
The ailing president breathed his last at Mount Elizabeth Hospital where he had been undergoing treatment for respiratory problems and some other complications since March 11.
Zillur Rahman was flown to Singapore March 10 night and admitted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital the following morning.
Before being taken to Singapore, Zillur was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on March 10 with respiratory problems.
Zillur had been suffering from fever since March 9 morning and was taken to Dhaka CMH after he had developed breathing problems.
Bangabhaban official sources said the 83-year-old president was on respiratory support while boarding the aircraft for Singapore.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Leader of the Opposition in parliament Begum Khaleda Zia and Speaker Abdul Hamid expressed deep condolence at the death of the president.
They prayed for the salvation of his departed soul.
As the news spread, condolences poured on different social networking websites and blogs. Most of such posts said the country lost an honest and dedicated politician.
