Honolulu's rail transit line has been in the works for years, but with all the stop and go, here are some things that all Oahu residents should know.

1. Hawaii's Traffic Sucks

In recent years Hawaii's traffic has been rated among the worst in the nation according to the a study by INRIX Traffic Scorecard

2. It's Going to Cost You

Rail will cost over $5 billion. $1.5 billion is coming from the federal goverment and the rest is coming from an increase in Hawaii's taxes

3. You Won't Be in Stuck In Traffic As Long

Rail transit is expected to cut 30 minutes from your commute time by taking 40,000 cars off the road each day.

4. Hawaii's Views of Paradise will be Scarred

The rail transit line will be over 20 miles long and will include over 700 pillars and the removal and replacement of 900 trees

5. Many Jobs Will be Created

With the construction of rail over 10,000 jobs will be created. Many of these jobs will be sustained to run the rail system after construction is complete.

6. Everyone and the Grandma will be Riding

About 100,000 people are planned to ride the rail line each day. Thats about 10% of the population

7. People are being Evicted

As with many major construction projects, residents and businesses are being evicted from their homes and locations in exchange for a stipend. Some voluntary and others mandatorily.

8. Construction's been Delayed

Many different activist groups including The Outdoor Circle and Native Hawaiian groups have gone to court to stop construction on rail. Construction is planned to start back up in September

9. Rail is Good for the Environment

Breathe easier, because by taking 40,000 cars off the road, rail will decrease carbon emissions by about 75% per passenger mile.

10. Opening is slated for 2017

The current hold ups and delays have pushed back the planned opening date by one year.
