Russell Crowe is used to playing the hero, but while kayaking last September off the Long Island coast, he needed some help himself. Luckily, a patrolling Coast Guard ship spotted the lost Oscar winner and was able to give him a lift back home.

2. Simon Cowell

The X-Factor judge we all love to hate showed off his sensitive side while yachting in the south of France. Cowell responded to an SOS call and helped rescue nine passengers onboard a sinking ship.

3. Jennifer Lawrence

Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence put her survival skills to good use after a woman collapsed in front of her Santa Monica apartment. Lawrence comforted the woman and waited for medical assistance to arrive.

4. Patrick Dempsey

McDreamy showed off his trauma skills after a car crash took place near his Malibu home. Dempsey used a crowbar and a fire extinguisher to pull the 17-year-old driver from his burning mustang.

5. Petra Nemcova

SI swimsuit cover model Petra Nemcova held onto a palm tree for eight hours with a broken pelvis during the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Nemcova was eventually rescued by Thai civilians and spent six weeks in the hospital.

6. Brad Pitt

While filming a 700-person zombie invasion scene for his upcoming film “World War Z,” Pitt swooped in to save an extra from being trampled in the mayhem.

7. Prince William

Helicopter rescues are all ways awesome. And they are even more awesome when performed by a prince. The heir to the throne rescued two teenage girls stranded at sea shortly after the London Olympic Games.

8. Carrie Underwood

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know celebrities love to rescue dogs and cats. So why are we talking about Carrie Underwood here? Because she rescued a chipmunk! Underwood took the injured chipmunk (that she named Dale) to the vet after her dog Ace sniffed him out.

9. Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet may have finally made up for letting go of Jack’s hand after that boating incident some years back. When a fire broke out at Richard Bronson’s estate, the Titanic star assisted Bronson’s mother out of the blaze.

10. Ryan Gosling

Because we can’t have a celebrity post without mentioning Mr. Gosling. After an art theft initiated fight broke out in the middle of an NYC street, Gosling intervened and everybody on the internet said “awww.”
