What Cool Jobs Do University Of Sheffield Graduates Get?

Here are five of our favourite interesting, pioneering or left-field careers that University of Sheffield graduates have carved out.

A degree from The University of Sheffield can open doors to all different types of careers, from finance or law through to journalism or scientific research.

Every year we see our graduates leave the University to embark on the careers that they want and have worked so hard for.

The diversity of these careers always amazes us and makes us extremely proud.

Here are five of our favourite interesting, pioneering or left-field careers that University of Sheffield graduates have carved out.

1. Claire Monk

When Claire Monk was studying for her BSc in Molecular Biology at The University of Sheffield she wasn't sure what she wanted to do for her career.

A chance meeting with the late Dave Wickett from Kelham Island Brewery gave Claire the inspiration to pursue a career in real ale and she is now Head Brewer at Welbeck Abbey Brewery.

2. Matthew McGregor

Matthew McGregor was an instrumental figure in securing a second term in office for Barack Obama - he also happens to be a Politics graduate and former Students Union Officer at The University of Sheffield.

Matthew headed up Obama's digital rapid response unit in the 2012 Presidential election campaign - a role which apparently led to him becoming known as the President's "backroom Brit."

He continues to work in politics as Political Director for Blue State Digital and is working with the Labour Party on their digital activity for the 2015 election.

3. Dr Paul Thomas

Dr Paul Thomas has used his PhD in Plant Sciences at The University of Sheffield to help perfect the science of growing truffles.

Since obtaining his PhD he has gone on to appear on Dragon’s Den and founded Mycorrhizal Systems Ltd. He has also appeared on Saturday Kitchen and Hairy Bikers and is passionate about using truffles in cooking.

4. Neal Mann

Neal Mann graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism in 2007.

After leaving The University of Sheffield he worked for Channel 5 and Sky News before joining the Wall Street Journal, initially as Social Media Editor but now in the role of Multimedia Innovations Editor.

Neal is well-regarded as a pioneer within the journalism industry for the use of social media in news gathering and reporting and now shares his wisdom on all things digital with Journalism Studies students as a visiting fellow in the department.

5. Dan Walker

After graduating from the University of Sheffield with a BA in History and an MA in Broadcast Journalism, Dan Walker began his career as a commentator and sports reporter at Piccadilly Radio in Manchester, where he spent four years before moving to the world of television with ITV.

He started out with the BBC at North West Tonight in Manchester where he won the coveted Royal Television Society Award as the Best Regional Presenter in 2005, before moving on to London to work as a sports presenter on BBC News and BBC World. Dan took over on Football Focus in 2009.

He presents golf, rugby, horse racing and tennis and has interviewed everyone from Eric Cantona to Sir Alex Ferguson and the prime minister, David Cameron.
