Meet The Carpet Roll Challenge - The UK's Latest Craze!

We've all heard about the infamous ice bucket challenge that are currently going viral around the world with famous people from Lindsey Lohan, to George W Bush, to Lady Gaga taking part and many, many more. What you probably haven't heard so much about is a craze currently sweeping the UK called the Carpet Roll Challenge.

Where's The Carpet Roll Challenge From?

Originating in Folkestone, Kent, the carpet roll challenge revolves around rolling a person up in a carpet before rolling them down a field, path or road. The rollee's go around to family and friends with a sponsorship form making money for charity with every roll.

Local carpet specialists Action Carpets came up with the idea and have had great feedback from both local residents and people online around the UK.

The guys teamed up the Folkestone Rainbow Centre to help raise awareness for the organisation who help people in times of need, personal crisis as well as investing in children's early years' development.

Yesterday we caught up with Action Carpets CEO Michael King and he said:

"We were originally planning to sell old carpets at a discounted rate but soon realised that it was better to give them away for free. This challenge may sound dangerous and we can understand that their maybe some concern from the general public but we have a safety rolling guide in store that we recommend all rollers read before taking part."

Tom Roberts, 35 & Chris Merson, 37 (pictured above) were the first 2 to get involved in the challenge

"We've had a few rolls down the Whitstable high street and so far we haven't got in too much trouble! We've probably had our fill of rolling for now as I banged my head on a car but we're glad that the challenge is getting out there and raising awareness for the rainbow centre."

The World Record Holder For The Carpet Rolling Challenge

Oliver Yexley, 23 (pictured above) from London believes that he is currently holding a carpet rolling record saying

"I was so excited about the challenge that I pulled up my own carpet. I've rolled down my garden 67 times and must admit I've felt better! My aim is 100 rolls by the end of this week and I've made £367 so far for the rainbow centre. This cause is close to my heart so I will try my upmost to get over £500."

The Dark Side Of The Carpet Rolling Challenge

Unfortunately it hasn't all been fun and games and police forces around the UK are very much aware of the craze but have stated that they will only interrupt when necessary.

There have been a couple of isolated incidents including 2 teenagers from Nottingham being arrested for attempting to roll during a local bowls game and a near fatality when a man was rolled along a diving board into a swimming pool without being informed.
