Workers have campaigned at length in the past to achieve better lifestyles for all Australians. Australians now have the benefit of workplace rights and conditions, such as; annual leave, paid parental leave, pay increases, pay equity, penalty rates, leave loading, awards, allowances, consultation, agreements, meal breaks, redundancy pay, protection from discrimination and fixed hours of work. We also have the benefit of Superannuation and Medicare, both won by the Labour Movement. These are known as the 27 Ways. Many of the 27 Ways are currently under threat. Labour Day is about standing up for these hard fought for rights!

Whether you’ve been coming to Labour Day all your life, or this will be your first time, 2014 is your chance to show that you stand for freedom and a fair go.

This year, hundreds of thousands of Queenslanders will celebrate the achievements of the union movement and use the day to signify resistance to the breakdown of democracy in Queensland.

Queenslanders have a lot to celebrate - well over a century of union successes such as the establishment of the eight hour day, workplace health and safety, the establishment of the living wage, the push towards equal pay for women and the basic commitment to a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.

These are hard-won victories that benefit all workers and our families, plus the general community.

Queenslanders enjoy a great lifestyle with a diversity of jobs, our lovely beaches, a strong economy and a wealth of public assets. It is no coincidence that Queensland is so prosperous; Queenslanders have worked hard to make it great and secure prosperity for future generations.

These people are business analysts, linespeople, finance officers, admin staff, call centre staff, communications and media advisors, data officers, electricians, engineers, field officers, planners, safety advisors, community engagement officers, environmental advisors, all staff at our train stations including ticket officers and station masters, cleaners, payroll officers, and many more. They make Queensland the strong, beautiful state that it is; they make our state.

Queenslanders want to ensure it stays strong for generations to come.

This Labour Day, Queenslanders are marching together to make sure that essential services like electricity and public transport remain available to everyone and not just those who can afford them.
