Holly Gofightly 6 months agoHow about the fact that we teach kids biology and chemistry BEFORE teaching them physics, which is a lot like trying to construct a building’s foundation after you’ve finished the rest of the building? No wonder high school kids don’t “get” physics.

Marzi 6 months agoI learned these things in high school…and that was just two years ago so I don’t think it’s changed. I learned the structure of atoms in every class it seemed and yes, we had a whole section on quantum physics, and I did not take any honors science courses. This video is not based on facts. What high school doesn’t offer physics? If you take physics, you have to learn about what the guy is bitching we don’t learn about! So unless you dropped out, in at least one of the required courses, at least half the things would have been taught. Is this video a troll or something?

CardinalMiscreant 6 months agoYou’re HS is just one data point. Many HS’s will only have one physics course if any, that is an optional course so many students don’t even take it. You are very lucky to have had it but don’t ASSUME that just because your HS offered it it’s like that all over the country….

If you attended a decent high school and took your basic bio, chem & physics courses, then you certainly learned about atoms and maybe learned some rudimentary concepts about relativity and quantum mechanics. Regarding the latter, that kind of vague general knowledge is nothing more than what you would learn from watching a documentary on the Science Channel hosted by Brian Greene (and probably less in fact.) That introductory level of knowledge is completely useless in practical terms without understanding the math. So what’s the big deal, really?

I took AP physics in high school and nearly failed it because I couldn’t understand any of the concepts without taking calculus. I think advanced physics should taught at the college level unless the high school students have taken calculus. Otherwise it is just frustrating and discouraging.

It’s a poorly, thought-out video. The reason HS physics stops usually with electromagnetism is that the mathematics required to study areas of modern physics like relativity and quantum mechanics is at a very minimum 3 semesters of college calculus and in actuality, significantly more. I am speaking from experience, btw. More importantly, learning the basics like Newton’s three laws, gravity, basic electromagnetism is an excellent foundation for scientific knowledge and inquiry.
