Love Me Tater

Mr. Potato Head got his start in 1952, two years before Elvis Presley recorded his first rock and roll record. Now Graceland is hoping to turn the 58-year-old toy into a really hot potato. The Elvis estate, Hasbro Inc. and PPW Toys will release a $20 “Mr. Potato Head Elvis Presley” to help celebrate Elvis Tribute Week in August. The first version will wear a jumpsuit. A second version — in black leather suit — will be done in time for the Christmas holidays. “This is one of 15,000 Elvis-licensed products, but it is one we’re really excited about,” said Graceland spokesman Kevin Kern. People think of Mr. Potato Head as a toy for pre-schoolers, but PPW spokesman Dean Gorby said the Elvis version will help broaden the audience from young fans to adult toy collectors. A KISS version “did great” last year, Gorby said.

The $30,000 Kid's Toy

This is the three-dimensional spherical labyrinth that challenges the limits of your manual dexterity and spatial understanding as you maneuver a 5/8″ wooden marble through its entire course. The Superplexus ($30,000 not a typo) is a complex network of chicanes, multi-planar hairpin turns, spirals, and staircases–even a vortex. Hand made from 3- and 6-ply Finnish birch that form the track, over 400 hours are involved in its construction. The labyrinth is set inside a 36″ diameter acrylic sphere affixed to a Jatoba base using a stainless steel gimbaled mount that allows you to tilt the sphere in any direction to guide the marble. The entire track laid out on a straight line is 31′ longer than a football field. In addition to the track, the ball must travel on a 1/16″ diameter stainless steel wire pathway at eight points along the journey. A series of directional arrows indicate the course to follow, and successful completion requires a minimum of 425 turns (plane changes) of the sphere–without letting the marble fall off the track. Each Superplexus’ difficulty level can be customized. 50″ H x 36″ Diam. (65 lbs.)

LOST The Auction

Unless you live in a hatch underground, you are probably aware that LOST is coming to an end on Sunday, May 23rd (grab your tissues) and to commemorate this epic television series, Profiles in History is auctioning off iconic props from the show. Personal Note: If there is a generous benefactor out there who would like to bequeath some moola my way, I could do some real damage at this shindig. There are too many items up for auction to list them all here, but the ones that really caught my eye were Charlie’s Drive Shaft ring, Desmond’s picture of himself with Penny, Eko’s Jesus stick, Faraday’s journal, Kate’s toy airplane and Locke’s wheelchair. Here are some of the great items available to bid on...

You Are Sitting On My Coke

Coke has teamed up with furniture manufacturer Emeco to create a special version of the iconic Navy Chair. Each chair will be made out of rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) derived from 111 recycled Coke bottles along with some pigment and glass fiber for extra strength. Gregg Buchbinder of Emeco explains, “When Coke came to me with this project I jumped on it. It’s a huge investment for a small company, but we have the potential of reusing the PET from about 3 million plastic bottles a year. That’s a lot of bottles and a lot of chairs too. The new chair is the strongest, and most beautiful we can make. We’ve turned something you throw away into something you want and can keep for a long, long time.” The chairs will be available in June.

Meet The iWatch

File the iWatch under: THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE NOW. The concept was designed by Italy’s ADR Studio and sadly only exists in Photoshop. (Perhaps Steve Jobs will take note and create a new Apple timepiece category?) The iWatch features an aluminum casing and full-color LCD screen. It has 16GB of internal storage and could connect to the iPhone or iPad via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. It is designed to answer calls that come through on the iPhone in your pocket, or display RSS feeds, weather or photos. It even has a built-in pico projector for letting you show videos on a nearby wall.

Here Is The New Redesigned $100 Bill

The U.S. Treasury has unveiled a new $100 dollar bill that officials say is key to staying ahead of counterfeiters. Speaking at the new C-note’s debut, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said it’s a challenge to guard against counterfeiting as technology becomes more sophisticated and more dollars flow overseas. Staying ahead of bogus bills is a job that has become “more complex in recent years as technology advances and U.S. dollar flows expand and increase,” Bernanke said. He said as many as two-thirds of all $100 bills circulate outside the United States...

Sharp Images By Artist Mark Evans

All Mark Evans needs to create art out of cow hide is a knife, time and inspiration.
