10 Roles We’d Love To See ‘Frozen’ And ‘Wicked’ Star Idina Menzel Play On Broadway

Now that she’s not only a Broadway legend and West End alum, Idina Menzel is taking over the world one little lady at a time as she inspires everyone to ‘Let It Go’ as Elsa in Disney’s ‘Frozen’. Luckily, she returned to Broadway in ‘If/Then’ not long after the success of the modern animated classic but now that ‘If/Then’ is closing, what roles do we want to see Idina take on next?... 1. The Witch in ‘Into The Woods’

From one witch to another, surely Menzel would be fantastic in this classic musical by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim? With mega successful actresses like Bernadette Peters and Meryl Streep already putting their marks on the role, Idina would be a perfect fit.

2. Dot/Marie in ‘Sunday In The Park With George’

Another Bernadette Peters/Stephen Sondheim role Menzel would fit perfectly into would be Dot/Marie in the classic Sondheim musical ‘Sunday In The Park With George’. With stunning music and a moving story, it’d be so lovely to see Idina tackle a much more slow-paced musical for a change.

3. Nellie Forbush in ‘South Pacific’

Following the recent Broadway and West End revivals, Menzel would be following in the footsteps of the likes of Kelli O’Hara and Samantha Womack if she were to take on this classic Rodgers & Hammerstein role... can’t you TOTALLY see it!?

4. Daisy/Violet in ‘Side Show’

One of the most loved and most surprising ‘flops’ in Broadway history ‘Side Show’ was revived for the first time recently, but also once again ‘flopped’. Rumour has it that the production will be returning to the West End in the coming year or so – any chance Idina would take on one of the famous twins here in London?

5. Meg Dawson in ‘The Last Ship’

The most modern role in this lineup is Meg from Sting’s recent Broadway show ‘The Last Ship’. Following up from fellow Elphaba alum Rachel Tucker, Menzel would tear this gorgeous score a new one (and we’d LOVE to hear her Northern accent!)

6. Madame Thenadier in ‘Les Miserables’

We’ve never seen Idina take on a totally funny role, but when she has been funny, she’s had us in stitches! So how does Madame Thenadier in ‘Les Miz’ sound? Any ideas for who could be her hilarious husband?

7. Madame Morrible in ‘Wicked’

From one Madame to another, I wonder if Idina would be up for returning to Wicked later in her career to take on the evil Madame Morrible? I can definitely see it!

8. Dolly Gallagher Levi in ‘Hello, Dolly!’

Menzel doesn’t hide the fact that she adores Barbra Streisand and since Streisand played the role perfectly in the movie adaptation of this classic musical, it’s pretty obvious that she’d be a fantastic fit for a revival. Make it happen, Mr Producer!

9. Norma Desmond in ‘Sunset Boulevard’

Later on in her career, I wonder how playing the iconic role of Norma Desmond in ‘Sunset Boulevard’ sounds? With actresses like Glenn Close and Patti LuPone having taken on the role in the past, Idina would make a fantastic star of the show.

10. Mama Rose in ‘Gypsy’

And finally, another role that Idina MUST play later on in her career is Mama Rose in ‘Gypsy’. With the first ever West End revival finally hitting the Savoy Theatre this March, would Idina consider starring in another revival in a decade’s time?...
