The police released the footage of two men stealing a crate of beer from the convenience store in a bid to track them down.

The robbery took place on Jan. 6 in Kings Norton.

The two men, described by police as white and in their twenties, threatened the 40-year-old shopkeeper with a handgun and demanded money.

Tanda, who appeared to be relatively calm despite having a gun pointed at him, opened his cash register and began to hand over the money to one of the robbers.

Then he suddenly grabbed a baseball bat from under the register, activated the alarm, and fended off both attackers, leaving them to make off with nothing more than the beer and a mobile phone, police said.

Police said Tanda "acted bravely to defend his livelihood" but did not recommend such "acts of heroism."

The investigating officer, D.C. Katie Morris, said in a statement: "This was a violent and frightening robbery by two men who had no regard for the safety of the shopkeeper or his customers.

"The shopkeeper acted bravely to defend his livelihood and in this case it paid off, but the reality is this could have ended in tragedy. We would not recommend acts of heroism when confronted by a potentially loaded gun."
