Update — Sept. 5, 9:53 a.m. ET: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko confirmed the cease-fire deal with Russian-backed rebels to end the violence in eastern Ukraine.
Poroshenko tweeted that he had ordered his military commanders to stop shooting from 6 p.m. local time, Reuters reported.
Update — Sept. 5, 9:37 a.m. ET: A European official confirmed that Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels signed the cease-fire deal.
Heidi Tagliavini of the Organization For Security and Cooperation (OSCE) said the cease-fire would begin at 11 a.m. ET.
The Ukrainian government and pro-Russian rebels signed a cease-fire in Belarus effective Friday, Russian media reported.
Pro-Russian rebels tweeted that the cease-fire deal would begin in less than two hours, around 11 a.m. ET.
The Ukrainian government has not confirmed the rebels' announcement of the cease-fire deal.
The announcement came as rebels and Ukrainian officials met in Minsk with representatives from Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
