11 Images Of The Devastating Earthquake In Pakistan That Was Powerful Enough To Create A New Island

At least 330 people have died and as many as 445 injured in the 7.7 magnitude quake that has left thousands homeless in southwestern Pakistan.

1. A violent earthquake ripped through a remote region in southwestern Pakistan on Sept. 25, killing as many as 330 people and injuring 445.

2. Up to 700 people are feared dead in remote villages beyond the reach of rescue services, doctors told The Telegraph.

3. The powerful earthquake flattened scores of mud houses in villages, leaving thousands homeless.

4. The remoteness of the hit areas and damaged communication networks have hindered rescue operations in some villages. Some of the injured had to be airlifted to major cities such as Quetta and Karachi.

5. Many people are still feared to be trapped under the rubble and wreckage of their homes.

6. Pakistan's military sent more than 1,000 troops in helicopters and convoys on mountain roads to help with rescue and relief efforts.

7. "We have lost everything, even our food is now buried under mud and water from underground channels is now undrinkable because of excessive mud in it due to the earthquake," Noor Ahmed, a 45-year-old farmer, told The Telegraph.

8. "We need more tents, more medicine and more food,” said a spokesman for the provincial government.

9. The quake's tremors caused buildings to shake in Karachi and were felt as far as New Delhi and Dubai.

10. The force of the quake created a small island visible off the southern coast.

11. “When such a strong earthquake builds pressure, there is the likelihood of such islands emerging,” the director of National Seismic Monitoring Center told the Associated Press. "That big shock beneath the earth causes a lot of disturbance.”
