    Nelson Mandela: Our Tata

Facebook as seen through the eyes of a young South African on the day Tata has passed.

Today is one filled with sadness, humility and a small amount of joy.

As a South African, this day was one that we, as a nation, have been expecting; a day in which the world would lose one of its brighter lights.

The first memory I have of Tata, was the day he was released. A solemn face, supported by Winnie Mandela, fist raised high in defiance and victory.

Growing up in a formerly segregated township, the 1994 election was a big deal to our little town. I remember being 7 years old and playing games with my younger cousin, re-enacting our version of what we felt the election would be. Later that year an election poster illicitly lifted off a street light-pole became a significant piece of artwork that has hung in my home for over two decades.

Through years of struggle, light and love, South Africans have made it through and become one nation due to the efforts of a generation that stood for integrity, justice and freedom. Despite the efforts of some who would try to eradicate what has been fought for, my Facebook Timeline tells a different and beautiful story.

Rest in peace Tata Madiba. #ProudlySouthAfrican
