An online petition is circulating concerning Sgt. Gwen Beberg’s fight against the Defense Department to let her bring home Ratchet, a dog she rescued from a burning pile of garbage in Iraq, upon returning to Minneapolis next month. If that’s not upsetting enough, it gets worse: after initially rescuing Ratchet, she was separated from him in a transfer. However, she confirms he’s “alive and doing okay,” which almost makes the story bearable.
