Apparently there was a guy named Harry Whittier Frees that would take horrifyingly cute picture of animals dressed up as people for children’s books. These were the original cat memes before the internet even existed.
In 1863 and 1864, eight former slaves toured the northern states to raise money for impoverished African-American schools in New Orleans; four children with mixed-race ancestry and pale complexions were deliberately included to evoke sympathy from white northerners. Photographs of Charles Taylor, Rebecca Huger, Rosina Downs, and Augusta Broujey were mass-produced and sold as part of the campaign.
Imagine being famous in a world before cell phones and digital camers.
In 1910, the USS Pennsylvania nailed some questionable quality wooden planks together to form the first water based air strip. Pilot Eugene Ely was selected as the lucky man to test it out.
Some of what passed for everyday life 75 or 100 years ago would send you running screaming in the other direction today. And when those scenes are captured on grainy old-school film, you get the stuff of nightmares.
This is actually brilliant. Why this mode of compact parking never took off is beyond me.
Beautiful juxtaposition. Even if you aren’t particularly religious, the commitment is commendable.
Suddenly being able to do three dead weight pull-ups doesn’t seem like such an achievement.
