Is serial slavish critical devotion to a revolving set of shows — from Sopranos to The Wire to Mad Men — a sign of the shallowness of our cultural discourse, or our deep need to connect? I love think pieces about TV, and also Mad Men is so totally awesome, you should really watch it!

TV BUZZ: After an unfinished 2nd season due to the writers’ strike, the Dillon Panthers are set to take the field for their 3rd season on DirecTV tonight. Since DirecTV has picked up part of the tab on the show, they are getting first dibs at airing it for their subscribers tonight. Loyal fans have either subscribed to the satellite service or found their own alternatives. However, model citizens will have to wait until February to catch the new season on NBC.

In the show, contestants of all shapes and sizes try to rearrange their limbs to fit through an approaching hole in a wall, or risk being dumped into a pool of water. There’s a spate of YouTube videos from both the Japanese show and the American one, so take some time and get to know what may become your newest obsession.

Anything you see on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Colbert Report, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Burn Notice, or advertised will be available for purchase through Amazon on your remote controller. This new alternative to TV shopping channels gives advertisers more access to a broader range of audiences. Can’t this be classified as some sort of subliminal messaging scheme?
