Here’s a surveillance video taken from inside a school bus right as a tornado throws it into a wall. You can only imagine how grizzly the aftermath would be if the children hadn’t been successfully evacuated.

The Cat 5 twister was reconstructed using computer simulations. Last month, NASA’s new Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured a stunning image of a dust devil swirling about on the planet’s rocky surface.

To add insult to injury, tornado-ravaged Indiana was hit by snow over the weekend. It looks downright apocalyptic.

This is alternately heartwarming and heartbreaking. More twisters ravaged the the Midwest and the South today, claiming at least 3 lives on top of the 12 that were lost earlier this week. This is at least one spot of good news amid all the devastation.

And you thought “Twister” was bad! Last week, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite captured these stunning images of magnetically captured plasma moving like a tornado across the sun’s surface. But even more stunning than this video of the solar tornado are its statistics: it’s estimated to be about as large as Earth itself, with wind gusts approaching 300,000 mph and a temperature of 15,000 degrees fahrenheit. Uh… wow.

Can you spot why the Oklahoma Insurance Department had to apologize profusely after this e-mail was sent to hundreds of people? This mass e-mail asking for nominations for awards at the National Tornado Preparedness Summit has one very unusual criterion. Busted (works on a few levels here)!

Incredible painting inspired by a very popular weather photo. The artist did a very good job on putting this chaos onto canvas. (Illustrated by Max)

Will Norton and his father were on their way home from Will’s high school graduation when the Joplin tornado struck. Despite his father’s frantic efforts to hold on to him, Will was sucked through the sun roof of their vehicle by the tornado. His father is in stable condition, but Will is still missing. Will Norton was known as Willdabeest on Youtube, where his video journals had been seen over 1.6 million times. His family has established a Facebook page to try and find him. Just one of hundreds of tragic stories to come out of Joplin.

Stunning footage from a news team caught in one of the tornadoes near Oklahoma City. Power poles dance in midair as their vehicle is swept off the road. The crew from KFOR miraculously survived without injury. Others across the region weren’t so lucky. This twister was one of more than 30 that struck Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas last night. At least 13 people are dead.
