Shift Buzz LAPD detective Brett Goodkin, who helped bust the “bling ring” of thieves who stole from celebrities, apparently didn't get the department's okay before agreeing to consult on and appear in Sofia Coppola's movie about the thefts. Now he's under investigation. Moral: people who are actual detectives probably shouldn't play them in movies.
This is a disturbing sign that the Great Recession is way worse than anyone imagined. (via https:)

Tech Buzz After a Boing Boing reader discovered an ATM Skimmer — a camouflaged device and hidden camera attached to the ATM which steals your card information and pin — two others quickly found ATM skimmers around Manhattan. To the first eagle-eyed discoverer, police said it was “first one” they'd ever seen. Apparently, they need to be taking a closer look. And this is why I keep all my earnings in a shoebox under my bed. Try and counterfeit that, thieves!
Two really upsetting news stories about Pop-Tarts. When you read stuff like this you really just have to take a second and realize how lucky you truly are. There is so much tragedy in the world.
