Politics Buzz The former Pennsylvania Senator's record on earmarks is best seen through his own press archives.
Politics Buzz The former Pennsylvania Senator talks about his 2006 lose in a January 2011 interview with Forbes. He made that boast (!) to stress that he'd held the Republican base despite his 2004 endorsement of Arlen Specter.
Culture Buzz This is real and it's on the campus of Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. It's only available to students, who are all older than 17, and it's stocked with Plan B pills for $25 a pop. Can I also get a Whatchamacallit and some Cheetos?
Style Buzz Starting Monday, the principal at Pottstown Middle School is enacting a ban on Uggs and “open-top boots” in response to kids' stashing phones and snacks in their fugly footwear during class. A local news station discovered that some parents aren't pleased with the blessing in disguise. (The mom at 1:00 is my favorite.)
Sports Buzz Home run derby competitions have been pretty boring dating back to roughly 1960. The Reading Phillies, of the Eastern League, have a deranged plan for how to fix that during this summer's All-Star festivities. Woe for the poor intern that ends up suspended from that center field crane.
Politics Buzz It's almost forgotten now, but the education of the children of Rick Santorum became a major campaign issue in his failed 2006 re-election bid for the Senate. Santorum's children, while residing in Virginia, from 2001 and 2004, attended a Pennsylvania cyber charter school, which left taxpayers with a bill in excess of $100,000 dollars. Santorum, who campaigned heavily in his first congressional race against his opponent living in Virginia, was accused of hypocrisy. Santorum responded to attacks by releasing a ad, featuring his children, entitled “Important Job,” to defend himself. Santorum made the case that since he paid taxes to Pennsylvania, his children were entitled to services there.
Culture Buzz An ad campaign in Pennsylvania, intended to raise awareness about rape prevention, has been pulled by the state's Liquor Control Board. Rape victims came forward to say that the whole campaign made it look as if it were the women's fault, which is understandable considering it says that your friend has apparently already “made a bad decision” from the get-go.
Culture Buzz Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant football coach charged with 40 counts of child sex abuse, breaks his silence on the Penn State scandal with Bob Costas. And he unsurprisingly denies all the charges. “Horsing around” and “horseplay” are terms that are now forever tainted.
Culture Buzz On the heels of the revelation that the judge who freed Jerry Sandusky on bail was a donor to Sandusky's Second Mile charity, and the incredulous questions as to why she did not recuse herself, here are some more unanswered questions surrounding this awful scandal. Not to get into the realm of conspiracy theory, but there are some very disturbing “coincidences” surrounding this case.
Culture Buzz Jerry Sandusky in a 1987 NBC interview: “I enjoy being around children…I just have a good time with them.” “Everybody needs people to care for them, even if sometimes they don't want it.” *shudder*
Culture Buzz This is the horrific and damning story of Victim 2. From the Grand Jury Report into the alleged and repeated rape of young boys by former Penn State Assistant Coach Jerry Sandusky. The report identifies at least 8 victims, but Victim 2 is the case that directly involved Head Coach Joe Paterno and the upper echelons of the Penn State hierarchy. The abuse that's described, and the resultant cover up, is shocking.
Amateur video of the immediate aftermath of the crash of United Airlines Flight 93, shot from Berlin, Pennsylvania on September 11th, 2001. This footage was recorded by the late Dave Berkebile, whose family only now released it to the public. Berkebile's commentary is understated and eerie: “It shook the heck out of the house. I don't know what else is happening. They rammed one into the Pentagon and into the World Trade Center and we're watching it on TV and this one happened.”
Culture Buzz The Princeton Review has come out with their annual list of the Top 20 Party Schools in the United States. This list probably influences the decision of prospective university students more than we'd care to admit. Here are the Top 10 with school appropriate photos. 11 thru 20 only warrant an honorable mention.
McDain's Restaurant in Monroeville, Pennsylvania has raised the ire of baby-makers everywhere by banning children under 6 years of age. Owner John Vuick says parents with misbehaving children are “impolite” and “selfish,” and that those children are “not the center of the universe.” An army of angry Facebook mommies will soon bury you with indignant comments, Mr. Vuick. You have been warned.
Culture Buzz An amazing series of photos from the annual running of the goats in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Goats and humans fall by the wayside in what appears to be an ungulate death race. And who ended up winning the Sly Fox Bock Fest and Goat Race? Peggy, the three-legged goat! More photos at the Phoenixville Patch.
Pennsylvania is super hot on the BuzzFeed Network right now. Here's all the best viral buzz on Pennsylvania.
A leaking gas line exploded in Philadelphia this morning, killing one and injuring five, all of it caught on video. Horrifying and amazing at the same time.
