In honor of Memorial Day, here's a project that uses Google Earth to map US and Coalition military casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can see photos of the men and women who have died in these wars, find their hometowns, and learn where and how they died. The guy who created the map, Sean Askay, has been working on it for four years on his own time.

A fake copy of the New York Times, dated July 2009, declares the war over and trumpets many other liberal dreams. According to Gawker , volunteers are handing the paper out in New York today as part of an elaborate prank set up by the Yes Men.

CULTURE BUZZ: When the body of the Private First Class was returned to her parents in Missouri from Iraq, LaVena Johnson’s father called bullsh*t on the Army’s claim that her death was the result of a suicide. Footage clearly indicates that, in reality, Johnson was likely beaten, raped and murdered (in fact, a trail of blood was photographed outside her tent). The Army, however, has refused to provide further information regarding the case, proving that, even in an “army of one,” it’s not hard for a soldier to be easily forgotten if she isn’t a white male (or, better yet, a star football player ).

TV BUZZ: An HBO miniseries brings us a new view of war. It seems like a no-brainer that this will be great: The book it’s based on is one of the best accounts of the early days of the Iraq War, Evan Wright’s “Generation Kill,” and David “I Made the F*cking Wire” Simon is at the helm. MOVIE BUZZ: Nick Broomfield’s movie about one corner of the Iraq War finally comes to the U.S. The Haditha killings were one of the worst civilian casualty incidents of the war — 24 men, women and children were killed by a group of Marines after a roadside bombing, though all charges against the soldiers involved were dropped after an investigation. The movie looks at what happened from several different angles.
