Spc. Ivan Lopez, 34, soldier being treated for depression, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said. Sixteen people were injured. All the wounded and killed were members of U.S. military.
Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has been sentenced to death for the 2009 shootings, which left 13 dead and 32 injured. He will be the first active American soldier to be executed since 1961.
They say the defendant, Nidal Hasan, is deliberately trying to get the death penalty. The judge won’t let them leave.
Nidal Hasan, the army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 in 2009, is representing himself in the trial and will even question witnesses — including survivors of the deadly attack.
