Photographer Mike Mitchell took these amazing photos of The Beatles at the Washington Coliseum in 1964 when he was 18. Then he put them in a basement and forgot about them for 47 years. Next week, they are up for auction at Christie’s in New York. (via.)

The hand painted bass drum skin featured on the cover of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band sells for over $1,000,000 in auction. The relic was auctioned at Christie’s of London, and ultimately sold for four times its expected value. Touted as “the world’s most famous drum skin,” the piece is nothing short of a pop culture holy grail. The proud owner currently has it stretched over his Yamaha bass drum in his basement ready for full use…I jest.
