Science Buzz A group of scientists discuss what might happen if someone could stick their hand in the beam of the Large Hadron Collider. Short answer: They don't know, but it wouldn't feel good.

Valentin Kuznetsov just presented a paper at the International Conference on Computational Science on CERN’s use of MongoDB for Large Hadron Collider data. The paper, The CMS Data Aggregation System, is available as a PDF at ScienceDirect.
David has some concerns over whether or not the “Large Hardon Collider” will create a wormhole, and if he should have a period costume ready just in case. Sounds like somebody is ready for the “birds and the bees” talk.
Science Buzz Ready your fallout shelters! No but for serious, the scientists at CERN fired together some proton beams at 99% of the speed of light, and everyone is very pleased about the New Era of Physics that is upon us.
CERN has been using their twitter account to keep the public updated with the goings-on of the Large Hadron Collider. At least they were until they inadvertently ripped open a hole in space-time.

I guess a black hole that devours the Earth would kind of be the ultimate terrorist act.
Celebrity Buzz We should have seen this coming. When the Large Hadron Collider starts up again in September, Tom Hanks will be the one to switch it on. Then it will create a black hole and destroy the Earth. First that terrible haircut, now this. Why, Tom? Why??
Science Buzz The world’s largest particle collider is finally going online tomorrow morning. The first test will begin at about 3:30 a.m. ET — but stop worrying, the world’s not going to end! Unless we get hit by an asteroid at the same time.
The super collider facility in Switzerland is about to go on-line. They’ll be starting smaller particle beaming experiments, working up to a full particle collision by the end of 2008. They’ll either solve some of the major problems of modern physics or tear a whole in space/time and end reality as we know it.
