Disturbing footage of protesters being savagely beaten by state police in Cairo, where 22 people have been killed over the weekend. Protesters are demanding the interim military council, who took power following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, step aside and refrain from interfering with next week’s elections.
Police maced a group of students at the University of California, Davis, yesterday after they refused to remove their tents from the quad. About 50 protesters have been camping out there since they were kicked out of the administration building two days prior. Tragic story out of Fullerton, California. After being suspected of breaking into cars at a bus depot, 37-year-old schizophrenic Kelly Thomas was repeatedly beaten and tased by a group of five or six police officers. Thomas fell into a coma and died a week later. A very graphic photo of the extent of his injuries can be seen here. Thomas’ death has sparked protests and vigils in Fullerton. Police maintain Thomas resisted arrest. Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
