Culture Buzz Broadway musicals are dropping like flies due to tough economic times. Godspell, Brigadoon, and For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf have been scrapped before opening, and others are threatening the same. We say, what gives? Why is it that when pennies must be pinched, tap shoes and glitter are always the first things to go? Sigh.

Culture Buzz A musical featuring Latin music and hip hop steals top honors at the 2008 Tony Awards. The rich, crusty theatergoers made up for their “progressive” choice by awarding the Best Revival of a Musical to South Pacific, a show also involving “ethnic” characters, but with the addition of coconut bras to keep things, you know, “light.”

Unfortunately, all the dates are in Atlanta, but maybe this will open the door for some more genre-defying mash-ups, like My Chemical Romance on Ice or the Flaming Lips Cirque du Soleil Explosion.
