  • Whale Euthansia

    Science Buzz A baby whale that had been abandoned by its mother off the coast of Australia was euthanized after veterinarians determined it would not survive on its own. The poor little thing bonded with a yacht thinking it was his mother and tried to suckle from it. The whale was only two or three weeks old, hadn’t eaten for a week and had been bitten by sharks. The move to euthanize him has caused considerable controversy and animal lovers everywhere are mourning the loss of the whale nicknamed “Colin”.

  • Ruslana Korshunova Suicide

    Style Buzz Twenty-year-old model Ruslana Korshunova fell to her death from her downtown New York apartment building yesterday in an apparent suicide. Known as “The Russian Rapunzel” Korshunova — originally of Almaty, Kazakhstan — had been featured in ads for Marc Jacobs, DKNY, Vera Wang and Christian Dior. Her tragic death seems to have come as an absolute surprise to friends and family, who claimed she seemed to be “on top of the world,” though some reports suggest that she had shown her distress in posts on a social networking site.

  • Gorilla Massacre

    Politics Buzz In July of 2007, six gorillas were murdered, execution-style, in the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Brent Stirton, the photojournalist who shot the intensely disturbing photographs of the slain gorillas, returned to the Congo with writer Mark Jenkins to determine the why this atrocity happened. The story complete with brutal militias, environmental disasters, corruption, smuggling, and the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide is covered in the July issue of National Geographic. and a documentary on the subject will air July 1st.
