The most controversial topics in the elementary classroom. In an effort to eliminate potential “unpleasant emotions” among students, the New York Department of Education has placed a ban certain words.
Style Buzz Starting Monday, the principal at Pottstown Middle School is enacting a ban on Uggs and “open-top boots” in response to kids' stashing phones and snacks in their fugly footwear during class. A local news station discovered that some parents aren't pleased with the blessing in disguise. (The mom at 1:00 is my favorite.)
Politics Buzz Absurd excuse for flip flopping on an important issue for the sake of wooing Iowa evangelicals? Or the absurdest? A quote from Rick Perry explaining why he changed his mind from allowing abortion in cases of rape and incest, a position he held as recently as last month, to wanting a total ban.
Culture Buzz After Stella Harville brought her Zimbabwe-born fiance to the Gulnare Free Will Baptist church last summer, a former pastor proposed to ban interracial couples from joining the Pike County congregation “to promote greater unity among the church body.” Church members voted 9-6 in favor of the ban this week.
Culture Buzz In reaction to students planking on the streets of Metro Manila as a protest against the rise in oil prices, a Filipino congressman has submitted a bill that would ban the practice. Here is what Representative Winston “Winnie” Castelo wrote in his explanatory note of House Bill 5316, otherwise known as “Anti-Planking Act of 2011.” (Sources: Sun Star, Congressman Castelo's website)
McDain's Restaurant in Monroeville, Pennsylvania has raised the ire of baby-makers everywhere by banning children under 6 years of age. Owner John Vuick says parents with misbehaving children are “impolite” and “selfish,” and that those children are “not the center of the universe.” An army of angry Facebook mommies will soon bury you with indignant comments, Mr. Vuick. You have been warned.
You know what San Francisco needs to ban? The ability to ban things. Apparently certain factions of the San Fran political system believe purchasing anything from a goldfish to a puppy from a store is the equivalent of setting up a puppy mill in your back yard. Because nothing says democracy like draconian laws.

Google has banned Microsoft Windows from internal use. Employees will be given the choice between Apple's Mac OS and Linux. Adding insult to injury, Google is also publicly citing Windows security problems for the decision and blaming Windows vulnerabilities for the China hacking incident.

American democracy is on the brink of falling apart, and one solution might be to ban the practice of lobbying, which has become too corrupt and consuming.
TV Buzz Little People are asking the FCC to ban the word Midget on television after Joan Rivers suggested hanging midgets for a commercial on an episode of Celebrity Apprentice in April. Little People are claiming that the term “midget” is as offensive and inappropriate as an racial or ethnic slur, and should not be allowed on television. I think the easier solution would just be to ban Celebrity Apprentice from television.
