Culture Buzz Stereoscopic GIFs are created from a pair of pictures that have been taken simultaneously at eye level and about 20 degrees apart (to replicate the difference of the view of your right eye and the view of your left eye) and then switching back and forth between them. The Civil War picture displayed in this way tricks your brain into seeing a three-dimensional depth in a 2D image.

I visited MakerBot founder Bre Pettis at the Botcave in Brooklyn for a heads-on demonstration. They had lasers and corn starch and beer. Pretty cool.
