10 TOP NON HIT SINGLES FROM 2014

A top 10 list of singles released in 2014. They are generally guitar led rock n' roll but also all great pop songs that sound great on radio but they did not bother the top 40 in either the US or UK. In fact only one managed to reach the UK top 100. Does this matter in this day and age? Probably not and there is so much great new music being released - check out A Best of 2014 on the Moon to find a lot more.

    1. Slow Club - Complete Surrender

The song of the Summer/year from one of the albums of the year from Gods very own County - check it out on the Moon. You could not ask for anything more poptastic and yet in the UK it did not get into the top 100. Still when fellow Tykes Pulp first released Babies it did not chart so maybe there is hope yet...

    2. Ezra Furman - My Zero

A cracking track from a cracking first solo album check it out on the Moon. It is his 4th LP but first without his Harpoons but sadly he has yet to feature on Billboard...

    3. Big Deal - Always Boys

From a great EP of new tracks and a couple of new versions of old songs. Despite this track being a non album track it did not get in a top 100 in the US or UK but then the EP was 5 tracks so UK chart ineligible....

    4. David Woodcock - Open Secret

His third single released just before his debut album and it is utterly poptastic in a very English take on rock n' roll. If the the Jam had released this in 1980 in the UK it would have probably been a number 1. Check out the album on the Moon

    5. Girl One and the Grease Guns - Bashed, Beaten and Broken (Trip the Switch)

Not as poptastic as their Jessica 6 single from last year but quite brilliant despite not really having a chorus but it does have some great lyrics very well pronounced and some fantastic synth sounds. Check out 12 other tracks from the singles and EP releases so far on the Moon and I am very much looking forward to an album. Deserves to be top 10 but obviously they have yet to get in the UK top 100.

    6. Martin Carr - Santa Faye Highway

A song I have known in demo form a few years already but only finally got a proper release this year. The studio version and probably the most poptactic track Mr Carr has released since Wake Up Boo with the Boo Radleys which went to number 5 in the UK back in 95. This was the lead single but digital only of course did not get in the top 100. There are a number of other great tracks on the album and you can check out A Best of Martin Carr on Spotify on the Moon and much more Mr Carr related.

    7. Jenny Lewis - Just One of the Guys

A brilliant single released well in advance of the great album with a multiple A list starring video it also features and is produced by Beck but it did not bother the Billboard 100. The album did at least get in the top 10 though. Check A Best of her former band Rilo Kiley on the Moon

    8. Jake Bugg- Messed up Kids

One of the more catchy numbers from his 2013 second LP that was released as a single as the Messed Up Kids EP which had 3 extra tracks which is something that should be encouraged, especially when they are all great or very good. Mr Bugg has also sold a massive number of albums in the UK so you would think this would be able to chart? But is only managed the dizzy heights of 71 in the UK .

    9. Alvvays - Archie Marry Me

A slice of indie heaven from Canada and a band trumpeted by many but I don't think it charted in Canada never mind the UK or US. Back in the days of Britpop a band could go top 10 with a track like this and be a bit famous for a bit.

    10. Caroline Rose - I Will Not Be Afraid

This is the lead single and title track form her major label debut album from this year which was also the last track on her first, self released and superior album in acoustic form and is the kind of song Woody Guthrie would be proud of. It is also as relevant now as many of Woody's greatest and has a great video. Check out more on the Moon
