6. Anaïs & Henry & June

Woody Allen’s began a relationship with Mia Farrow in 1980 and although they never married, they adopted two children together and lived together until 1992. Allen didn’t adopt Farrow’s adopted daughter from a previous relationship, Soon-Yi Previn. In 1992, Farrow discovered nude photos that Allen had taken of Soon-Yi, and the couple separated. It was a controversial scandal at the time due to the fact that Previn was 19 to Allen’s 56 when their affair began, and the fact that he had ostensibly been a father figure in her life as a child. However, the couple has now been together for over 20 years, and they have adopted two children of their own.

10. Hepburn & Tracy

Although Spencer and Louise had been living separate lives for years, they never split and Hepburn never sought a marriage with Tracy. When Tracy’s health declined in the ’60s, Hepburn took a break from her career to care for him, moving into his house, and she was with him when he died on June 10, 1967. But she did not attend his funeral, and waited until after Louise Tracy’s death to speak publicly about their relationship. When asked why they stayed together for so long despite circumstances, Hepburn said “I honestly don’t know. I can only say that I could never have left him.”

For complex reasons, their relationship ended after Camilla married her first husband Andrew Parker Bowles in July 1973. Palace courtiers at that time found Camilla unsuitable as a wife to the future king, but Charles was heartbroken, writing to Lord Mountbatten: “I suppose the feeling of emptiness will pass eventually.” The couple resumed their relationship in 1979 while Camilla was still married, broke up again when Charles married Diana in 1981, but could not quit one another and resumed their relationship for the third time when he and Diana’s relationship “broke down” in 1986. Charles and Diana finally divorced in 1996 and Diana died the following year. Camilla and Charles were finally married in a civil ceremony in 2005.
